Quite simply the most important part of an IT structure.
A server is key to the performance and reliability of most commercial networks.
Slow, overworked server = sluggish network performance + user frustration.
It allows centralisation of data and backup which are critical for the smooth running of an operation. As this is the most important part of any network, Page Computers recommend that the server is updated (i.e. replaced) every 4 to 5 years.
We recommend a RAID 5 disk configuration to provide both a robust solution offering redundancy in the event of failure, and high performance. In English this means that if one drive completely fails then the other disks seamlessly carry on and there is no downtime. You also know that your data is fully protected. However, reliable backups are still necessary and a copy of the data should be kept offsite in case of a catastrophic disaster.
Page Computers recommend Windows Server or Small Business Server (SBS) depending on the applications required as they offer reliable, well supported platforms that are compatible with most proprietary applications. Windows Server incorporates Active Directory which streamlines network administration and features Terminal Services for remote administration.
Small Business Server can be used for up to 75 users and includes, Windows Server and Exchange Server in the basic edition and includes SQL server in the premium edition. Exchange Server allows sharing of calendars, contacts, notes etc. Off-site access to the exchange central data store (the users Outlook) may be achieved in at least 2 ways.
